How is that happening?</b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b>I managed to finish only one painting in December. It seems like it took me forever -- but not because it was especially hard, but I had trouble making decisions about it; plus, there were lots of interruptions <i>AND</i> I wasn't feeling very motivated.<br /><br />But here it is: <i>Crater Range</i>, an area between Gila Bend and Ajo, Arizona. It's a volcanic-looking area that features an Air Force bombing range on the other side of those mountains! I actually finished it earlier this year, but I couldn't decide if I was keeping the distant hills and palms or replace it with blue sky. I ended up leaving it as it was. Size is 8" x 10" / 20cm x 25cm.</b></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b>I was surprised to learn that seagulls tend not to occur in the Hawaiian Islands. Apparently, they don't care much for the food they find there. Thus, they only stop by temporarily if they're migrating.<br /><br />But the tropicbirds fill that ecological niche!</b></span></p><p><b style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;">There is also a red-tailed species. This is one of the peaks in the Elk Range in Colorado -- near Aspen, and the same mountain range that includes the fabled Maroon Bells. I think this mountain is Pyramid Peak, although I'm not sure about that. The size is 11" x 14" / 28cm x 36cm. I may do a reshoot of the painting, since this one didn't come out that great.</b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b>I had considered adding some wildlife to the scene -- some mallard ducks or maybe some deer (I <i>DID</i> see a buck and doe together when I was there), but then I decided -- <i>naaahhh</i>. Dead trees and dry, cracked earth complete the setting.<br /><br />Sometimes the current events and what they mean to the future of our planet totally depress me, and that's the way I felt when I began this painting. There are "leaders" who seem hellbent on destroying the planet just so they can feed their hyperinflated egos. In this case, chuparosa shrubs produce red blooms that are much loved by hummingbirds. In this case Aries is a desert or peninsular bighorn sheep.<br /><br />Actually, this is the second time I painted a bighorn and named him Aries, so the painting is entitled <i>Aries II</i>.</b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b>In my opinion, bighorn sheep are the majestic animals of the desert -- so noble, so graceful -- and so endangered. These sparrow-sized (4.9"-5.7"/12.5cm-14.5cm) critters are the smallest owl species and eat mostly insects.</b></span></span></p><p><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b>The Native American pot is somewhat a product of my imagination. It has an owl motiff -- I've never seen a pot like this, but I've seen pottery figurines of owls. So I used the basic design of the figurines and placed them on a pot. The owl is actually sitting on a piece of cholla wood that ended up in the pot somehow.</b></span></span></p><p><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b>The winter constellation Orion the Hunter appears in the night sky. The title is somewhat reminiscent of how landscape artists used to title their paintings -- nothing poetic or unusual, just descriptive of what a viewer could see for himself or herself. And "bunny" really should be "desert cottontail rabbit," but "bunny" is cuter and shorter!</b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b>The site is somewhere east of Quartzsite, AZ, but I don't remember the name of the place. Bighorns are found around here, although I admit I've never actually seen them in this spot. But adding them to the scene is not fantasy -- it's likely they do show up on these hills.</b></span><p></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b>Otherwise, the hills and open spaces of this special place have long appealed to me, and I've painted this site numerous times, each a little different from each other. In springtime, the wildflowers color the area: yellow brittlebush and red-tipped ocotillo dominate the view. I included the spike-tipped rosettes of agave: people who know desert ecology have observed ocotillo and agave tend to appear together, at least in the California deserts.</b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b>Another thing I've noticed here is the ground isn't all a uniform color. I've noticed spotty regions of various tints, like green or red. The colors are quite subtle and don't show in the above photograph. But they DO show in the painting itself.</b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b>I imagine I'll do more paintings of this vista, although I'll have to continue working off of photos I've taken in years past. I've since learned that this entire area is part of a University of California at Irvine research center. My human presence could affect their findings and I don't want to contaminate their findings in any way. We only saw him once, long enough for me to grab a few photos of him before he took off.</b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b>Bullock's orioles are the western version of Baltimore orioles which prefer the eastern part of the country; in fact, where their respective ranges overlap, the two are known to hybridize. Ornithologists have an ongoing debate over whether or not these two birds are really the same species.</b></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: x-large;"><b>The world has some incredibly beautiful birds, and I expect to be painting some of them over the next few months. A gallery owner in Ohio asked me to place some bird paintings in her gallery.
